      ORCID: instructions for use

      05.09.2022

      Modern scientists live in a reality when, when interacting with the digital industry, the ability to present their work to the scientific community from all over the world is relevant. Scientometric databases are in great demand, and there is also a need not to get lost among other researchers. What should the author of scientific publications do so that he is not confused with anyone if there are several more Ivanov Ivanovich Ostapenko or Tamar Petrovna Sidorenko in the world? The answer to this question is already there. It was found and presented to the attention of the audience by the developers of the ORCID platform.

      In this article, you will learn more about what tools and features this resource offers users. And there will also be recommendations on how to link an ORCID account with scientometric databases or even download a publication that has never been posted on the Internet. This platform opens up enough opportunities to perform such functions.

      Author's ORCID ID - what is it?

      ORCID ID is a popular international system that provides an alphanumeric code for each author who publishes scientific materials. It is designed to accurately identify authors by assigning unique 16-character codes consisting of numbers and letters.

      How is ORCID ID useful for a researcher and author of articles?

      This code solves the problem that most researcher names are not unique. In addition, it often happens that in marriage the surname changes, and this, in turn, would complicate the search for the researcher's works for those who want to get acquainted with them.

      This is not the only difficulty the scientist faces in this context. There are problems associated with the tradition of designating initials, as well as the peculiarities of using different

      The organization that launched this independent registry is called ORCID Inc. The base began to function in October 2012, although it was announced back in 2009. The organization was registered in 2010 in the USA (Dalaware).

      The interaction of the base with other systems aimed at identification is also possible. Further on this can be found in more detail.

      What are the benefits of registering with ORCID?

      It is not a secret for any of the authors of scientific materials that for visibility and respectability in the professional community, you need to periodically publish your articles in reputable publications and raise really relevant and useful topics in them. But in order not to get lost among other authors or namesakes, there is a need for a notation system that makes it possible to easily find the researcher's works.

      What gives the scientist the use of ORCID ID:

      • Many editorial boards of recognized foreign publications require this identifier when it comes to submitting publications.
      • To apply for grants, you also need to have this alphanumeric code.
      • It is necessary to open the possibility of participation in international conferences.
      • This code improves the author's image in the scientific community, since it can be used to find out how the researcher's articles are presented in the information

      The possibilities of this system are massive. For example, this is the import of information about authors from WoS and Scopus scientometric databases. To accomplish this task, there is a special option that is responsible for linking to internal identifiers that are available on these platforms.

      It should be noted that the development of ORCID tools does not stop there. There are other options that involve entering information manually. In practice, this means that the author can manually arrange their own portfolio, consisting of real work, and write a short introduction. This is what will give him the opportunity to become even more visible to other researchers and all those who are interested in science and are looking for information on topics that the scientist is working on.

      If we talk about the ORCID task globally, then it is connected with the fact that:

      • eliminate inaccuracies that may arise in the identification of a particular author;
      • eliminate confusion when it is impossible to understand and determine which of the scientists the article belongs to, if we are talking about namesakes;
      • simplify the search for materials of specific researchers;
      • to make the information data bank more streamlined;
      • make sure that the scientists' citation index is actually truthful.

      In order to be able to accurately calculate how many publications an author has, one profile must function. That's what ORCID is for. That is why the ORCID ID code was developed.

      How to register in ORCID

      First of all, it is important to log in through the official resource called orcid.org. Then proceed in the following algorithm:

      • open the section called "For researchers";
      • click on the link "Register for an ORCID iD";
      • fill in all the required fields, starting with the first and last name and ending with the password with its duplication;
      • виберіть прийнятний собі рівень приватності;
      • make the necessary notes regarding your preferences for sending notifications;
      • choose whether you need to be informed about the news of the system, its changes;
      • read the terms of the privacy policy and fill in the appropriate fields;
      • check the correctness of the entered data;
      • complete the registration by clicking on the button that is responsible for this.

      How to find out your ORCID ID

      The author's ORCID is easy to recognize. To find your ORSID, you should use the recommendation that will follow.

      This information is at the top left corner of the page. You can use the link https://orcid.org/my-orcid. And even for those who, when logging into the system, forgot their login password, it is possible to restore it via the e-mail that was indicated during registration.

      That is why the emphasis was placed above on checking the correctness of the input at the time of registration. If you carefully look at all the ORSID options, registration will be easy and successful, and further use will also be hassle-free.

      How to add your articles to ORCID

      First, you traditionally need to log in by entering your username and password. Then you will see your profile and at the bottom there will be a tab called “Jobs”. You need to click where it is indicated by the arrow. By the way, navigating the site is quite simple. Next, you will see a button with the option “Add Jobs”. When clicked in this menu, a drop-down list option is rendered. And then you can choose between different options. Let's consider them in more detail.

      "Find and connect"

      The Import Jobs window will open. In it you can see online resources from which automatic import of publications is available. Further we will consider this in a separate paragraph, but for now we return to the functional.

      “Bind Bib TeX”

      Here you can import citations from files created in the BibTeX (.bib) format. This also applies to files that are exported from Google Scholar. You need to click on the button that is responsible for the option “Select file” and upload it. Previously, this file must be exported from the resource where your work already exists. Then the publications will be displayed in the ORCID profile automatically.

      “Link by hand”

      You can select the "Add Job" option. This gives you the ability to add any of your published articles. This feature is good because you can select and download even those works that are not on the Internet. This feature is often chosen by those who want to present a complete list of their published articles. When you have uploaded the article, the final step will be the “Add to list” option. What is good about the described function? Its advantages are expressed in several contexts at once:

      1. The scientist has the opportunity to present all his work, and not just those that are on the Web.
      2. He can better manage his scientific reputation by presenting his own work in full.
      3. This opportunity is good for those cases when you need to presentably show your work by submitting information for grants, internships, competitions and other professional opportunities.

      Therefore, when you use the ORCID tool, it is important to understand all of its functionality so that the current features do not go beyond your attention.

      How to link author's Orcid ID with other bases?

      The ORSID resource is associated with the most famous scientometric databases in the world. Through the "Import works" function, you can transfer your scientific articles automatically. Let's consider it on the example of concrete bases.

      • CrossRef Metadata Search. You can import any article that has a DOI from CrossRef. When you click on the link, the system suggests articles by the main name in ORCID. You can also search for materials yourself if you use the search function, the function of which is presented at the top of the page. Under each material there will be a green button with the words “ADD TO ORCID”.
      • ResearcherID. A profile in the Web of Science scientometric database can be linked to a profile on the ORCID platform. Then, after the profiles are linked, publications can be imported automatically. What does this give the scientist in practice? The ability to be more visible on respectable resources. The Web of Science database is the second largest published content in the world. Moreover, it is developing very dynamically.
      • Scopus-Elsevier. There are no other examples of such a successful and rapid scaling of scientometric databases in the world. The resource is the first in terms of the amount of content posted. Scopus has its own complex system of percentiles and quartiles, which determine the rating of the researcher and publications. Therefore, it is good when the ORSID and Scopus profiles are interconnected. To link profiles, you need to give Scopus permission to access your ORSID account. You can find your profile using the search option and then confirm linking profiles and then exporting content. After that, users of the Scopus database will be able to find the profile of a scientist in ORSID.

      How to make changes to ORCID?

      To edit a profile on this platform, you must:

      1. Select the Researchers tab. It is located at the top of the screen.
      2. Click on the account settings menu.
      3. Use the function that you need. For example, there is a menu for blocking a profile, adding or changing an email address, changing a password.

      In short, the platform is easy to use.

      Search for authors on the ORCID website

      To find the author in this system, you need:

      • use the search term located at the top of the site;
      • enter the last name of interest in Latin.

      Next, the results will open. They are shown in table format. The ORCID code will be in the first column, followed by the name of the researcher, and the third column will contain his last name.

      Summing up…

      For a modern scientist, an important role in his scientific career is played by how developed his communication with the community of like-minded people is. That is why most researchers tend to publish their materials in publications that are available in prestigious scientometric databases. In order not to get lost among the namesakes and not to lose contact with your publications in case of a surname change, there is an ORCID code.

      Articles in ORCID can be imported and exported by linking an account with profiles in scientometric databases. You can upload your published work, not previously posted on the Internet. In a word, the range of possibilities is large-scale, which makes this platform interesting for many researchers. Using it, you can:

      • organize information about your achievements;
      • get more opportunities for grant programs that allow you to reach a new financial level of support for your research;
      • improve the citation index when the work is visible to colleagues.

      Thus, the ORSID platform expanded the tools for interaction with scientometric databases and provided some other opportunities. In the process of using the site, the scientist can learn about them in more detail.
