General requirements
The academic title of associate professor is awarded to employees of higher education institutions, as well as postgraduate education institutions, who carry out educational activities in the relevant specialty at the appropriate level of higher education and higher spiritual education, who carry out scientific and pedagogical activities. To obtain the title of associate professor in Ukraine in 2023, scientists are required to meet the following requirements:
- присвоєно науковий ступінь доктора філософії (Ph.D.), кандидата наук, доктора наук;
- period of work as an assistant, lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor, professor, head (head or deputy) of a department for at least ten academic semesters, including the last calendar year at one department (at one higher educational institution), including part-time or under an employment contract with hourly pay;
- international experience confirmed by documents (certificates, diplomas, other documents), in particular about studies, internships or work in a higher educational institution, scientific (or scientific and technical) institution of a country that is part of the OECD and/or the EU, or participation (of managers/executors) in projects financed (financed) by the specified countries (except for persons with disabilities of group I);
- teaching of academic disciplines in the state language and/or the language of a country that is a member of the OECD, at a high scientific and methodological level, as confirmed by the conclusion of the Department of Higher Education.
Publication requirements
To obtain the title of associate professor or professor, one must have scientific publications that meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The main requirements for scientific publications are as follows:
- Публікації повинні мати актуальну тематику і відповідати напрямкам науково-дослідних робіт;
- Публікації повинні мати науковий рівень, що відповідає вимогам Міністерства освіти і науки України;
- Наукові публікації повинні бути опубліковані в наукових виданнях, що мають наукометричні характеристики в Scopus або Web of Science;
- The presence of articles published in category B publications is mandatory.

Requirements for the B2 certificate
One of the important conditions for obtaining the title of associate professor is the presence of a certificate in accordance with the Common European Recommendation on Language Education (at level not lower than B2) in the languages of the EU countries or qualification documents (higher education diploma, scientific degree) related to the use of a foreign language. - Присвоєння вченого звання доцента або старшого наукового співробітника;
- Стаж роботи в професорсько-викладацькому складі вузу не менше 10 років і останній рік – на одній кафедрі одного вузу на посадах доцента, професора, завідувача кафедри. Для дослідників термін продовжено ще на 5 років;
- Підтвердження міжнародного досвіду документами про навчання, стажування, участь у конференціях, роботу в установах країни, що є членом Організації економічного співробітництва та розвитку або Європейського Союзу, а також участь у проектах, що фінансуються цими державами;
- Availability of a conclusion from the Department of Higher Education regarding teaching in the state language and the language of a country that is a member of the OECD, at a high scientific and methodological level.
Article requirements
As for associate professors, there is a requirement for professors regarding the number of scientific articles. This means the publication of scientific and methodological works in journals reviewed by professional publications after the defense of the doctoral dissertation. At least two articles must be published in peer-reviewed journals Scopus, WoS, which is confirmed by the presence of ISSN and displayed on the website.
If we talk about the number of publications, it is difficult to name a specific figure, because this is not recorded in the order. It is only indicated that in the case when the issue of defense is raised ahead of schedule (earlier than 5 years after the defense of the candidate's thesis), it is necessary to have at least 3 publications in journals (Q1, Q2) or journal citation reports on the topic of the doctoral thesis. But the Order "On the Publication of the Results of the Dissertation for the Degrees of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences" states that a scientist must have at least 20 publications in specialized journals of Ukraine and foreign countries.
Вчене звання професора співробітникам наукових установ може бути присвоєно, якщо на додаток до перерахованих вище пунктів будуть три статті (тобто на одну більше) в міжнародних базах Scopus і WoS, а також якщо співробітник підготував мінімум трьох кандидатів наук (докторів філософії).
Requirements for the B2 certificate
Наявність сертифіката відповідно до Загальних європейських рекомендацій з мовної освіти на рівні B2 і вище мовою однієї з країн Європейського Союзу або кваліфікаційних документів з використання іноземної мови, наприклад, диплом про вищу освіту, є однією з обов’язкових вимог для отримання звання професора.
