- науковий ступінь кандидата наук здобувається на третьому рівні вищої освіти на основі ступеня магістра;
- кандидатська дисертація: повинна містити нові науково обґрунтовані результати проведених здобувачем досліджень, що вирішують конкретну наукову задачу, яка має важливе значення для певної галузі науки (подається до захисту тільки за однією спеціальністю);
- наявність необхідної кількості та видів наукових публікацій, включаючи статті у виданнях категорії “Б”, міжнародних наукометричних базах Scopus і Web of Science, а також монографії або розділів монографії;
- активна участь у наукових конференціях, семінарах і симпозіумах;
- здобувач наукового ступеня кандидата наук, який не має повної вищої освіти в галузі науки, за якою підготовлено дисертацію, складає додаткові кандидатські іспити, перелік яких визначає спеціалізована вчена рада за програмами, затвердженими МОН (про дату складання додаткових кандидатських іспитів необхідно повідомити ВАК не пізніше ніж через місяць);
- наукові ступені в галузі медичних і ветеринарних наук можуть бути присуджені здобувачам, які мають відповідно повну вищу медичну і ветеринарну освіту (за окремими науковими спеціальностями, перелік яких визначає ВАК, наукові ступені в галузі медичних і ветеринарних наук можуть бути присуджені здобувачам, які мають повну вищу біологічну освіту);
- ступінь кандидата наук присуджується спеціалізованою вченою радою вищого навчального закладу (наукової установи) в результаті успішного виконання здобувачем вищої освіти відповідної освітньо-наукової програми та публічного захисту дисертації в спеціалізованій вченій раді.

- науковий ступінь доктора наук здобувається особою на науковому рівні вищої освіти на основі ступеня доктора філософії за умови проведення оригінальних досліджень, отримання наукових результатів, що забезпечують вирішення важливої теоретичної або прикладної проблеми, що мають загальнонаціональне або світове значення і опубліковані в наукових виданнях;
- наявність наукового ступеня кандидата наук або його еквівалента;
- наявність значного досвіду наукової роботи та практичної діяльності у своїй галузі знань;
- підготовка та захист докторської дисертації, що є науковим дослідженням, виконаним на високому рівні та робить істотний внесок у розвиток даної наукової галузі;
- наявність необхідної кількості та видів наукових публікацій, включаючи статті у виданнях категорії Б, міжнародних наукометричних базах Scopus та Web of Science, а також монографії або розділів монографії;

- успішне проходження атестації перед експертною комісією, включаючи захист докторської дисертації та участь у дискусії з опонентами.
It is allowed, by decision of the Ministry of Education and Science, to submit a doctoral dissertation to the doctoral council earlier than five years after receiving the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Candidate of Sciences) in the event of a significant personal contribution of the applicant to ensuring the development of the relevant field of science, which is related to the scientific results of the doctoral dissertation. Confirmation of a significant personal contribution of the applicant to ensuring the development of the field of science in which the dissertation was prepared may be:
- the presence of three patents for invention that have passed a qualification examination and relate to the scientific results of the doctoral dissertation;
- having at least three publications on the topic of the doctoral dissertation in publications classified as first, second quartiles (Q1, Q2) according to the SCImago Journal and Country Rank or Journal Citation Reports classification;
- awarding state awards (prizes) of Ukraine or other states for the scientific results obtained by the applicant, reflected in his doctoral dissertation.

- можливі вимоги до якості та рейтингу наукових журналів, в яких розміщені публікації, а також до наукового внеску здобувача в ці роботи (наприклад, перше авторство або участь у колективних роботах).
The following publications are included in the dissertation topic:
- with a justification of the obtained scientific results in accordance with the purpose of the article (the task set) and conclusions;
- in scientific publications that, on the date of their publication, were included in the list of scientific publications approved in accordance with the procedure established by law;
- in scientific periodicals of other countries in the field in which the dissertation was prepared, provided that the dissertation materials are presented in a complete manner;
- in the amount of no more than one article in one issue (number) of a scientific professional publication.
Publications that repeat scientific results previously published in other scientific publications that are included in the minimum number of publications on the topic of the dissertation are not counted towards the dissertation topic.
Publications for a PhD candidate
On the topic of the dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Sciences, it is necessary to have at least three scientific publications, of which:
- at least one article in scientific publications of other countries in the field in which the dissertation was prepared. Such publication may be equated with publication in scientific publications of Ukraine, which are included in international scientometric databases,
- recommended by the National Agency;
one article may be published in an electronic scientific professional publication; - from the fields of knowledge of natural science and technology, instead of one article, one patent for an invention (author's certificate of invention) may be added, which has passed a qualification examination and directly relates to the scientific results of the dissertation (if any);
- no more than one manual (for dissertations in the field of pedagogical knowledge);
- instead of one article, a monograph, including a collective one, may be attached;
- articles in scientific domestic and international peer-reviewed professional publications included in the list of scientific publications.
Publications for PhD
According to the topic of the dissertation, for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences, 15 scientific publications are required, of which:
- at least five publications in scientific publications of other countries in the field in which the dissertation was prepared, in particular articles published in the materials of scientific conferences, congresses, symposiums, seminars held in other countries. Such publications may be equated with publications in scientific publications of Ukraine, which are included in international scientometric databases recommended by the National Agency;
- no more than five publications in electronic scientific publications;
- from the fields of knowledge of natural science and technology, instead of three articles, three patents for invention (author's certificates of invention) may be attached, which have passed a qualification examination and are directly related to the scientific results of the dissertation (if any);
- no more than three monographs, including collective ones, in addition to the published monograph submitted for the degree of Candidate of Sciences (Doctor of Philosophy) and monographs;
- no more than three manuals (for dissertations in the field of pedagogical knowledge);
- articles in scientific domestic and international peer-reviewed professional publications included in the list of scientific publications.
