The process of obtaining a scientific degree in Ukraine is an important and complex stage for a researcher. The publication requirements for the dissertation defense in 2024 include both quantitative and qualitative criteria. This article examines the publication requirements for three scientific degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Candidate of Sciences, and Doctor of Sciences, and presents optimal and budget-friendly publication options.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
According to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated January 12, 2022 No. 44, to defend a dissertation for a PhD degree, it is necessary to publish at least three articles in scientific publications included in the list of scientific specialized publications of Ukraine on the date of publication. If the article is written in co-authorship and the number of co-authors (including the applicant) exceeds two people, such an article is counted as 0.5 publications. That is, to obtain admission to the PhD defense, it is enough to publish three separate articles in specialized publications of Ukraine.
PhD
In 2014, the Law “About higher education". This law introduced the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy for the first time in Ukraine, which was equivalent to the degree of Candidate of Sciences. Candidate of Sciences diplomas continued to be issued to those postgraduate students who entered their educational programs before the new law came into force. However, new postgraduate students began to be trained in four-year PhD programs.
As for the defense of a candidate of sciences, each university has its own requirements on this issue. In some universities it is still possible to defend, and in some it is no longer possible. Check with the academic secretary of your university about the possibility of defending a candidate of sciences degree.
Doctor of Science
To obtain a Doctor of Science degree, it is necessary to publish at least ten scientific publications reflecting the main results of the dissertation. According to the Resolution of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine No. 507 dated 03.05.2024, the results of the dissertation must be presented in twenty scientific publications, including:
- Articles in scientific publications included in the list of scientific specialized publications of Ukraine.
- Articles in scientific periodicals of other countries in the field of the dissertation.
After the entry into force of Order No. 496, from September 1, 2024, the requirement to have five articles in publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus databases will become mandatory. To defend a PhD degree, it is necessary:
- 15 articles in specialized publications of category B.
- 5 articles published in Scopus/Web of Science.
Articles in journals belonging to the first and second quartiles (Q1 and Q2) according to the SCImago Journal and Country Rank or Journal Citation Reports classification are equated to three publications, in publications of the third quartile (Q3) - to two publications.
Optimal publishing strategies
To meet the publication requirements for a PhD, the following strategies can be considered:
- Publication of 15 articles in category B publications.
- Alternative option: 2 articles in Q3 journals (equivalent to 4 publications) and 1 article in a Q4 journal.
