The September update of the Scopus database was one of the largest in recent years. A number of journals in which Ukrainian scientists were published were excluded.
Several more publications are under investigation, and, according to forecasts, Academy articles, may be removed from the database in the near future.
Thousands of authors around the world have already lost their previously indexed articles due to predatory or unethical actions by individual publishers.
Such cases show how important it is to carefully check the journal before submitting material, because even a formally “indexed” publication can lose its Scopus status at any time.
Over the past few months, we have repeatedly warned in the column "Candidates for exclusion from Scopus"that the number of questionable journals is growing rapidly.
The September 2025 Scopus update confirmed these predictions: the system is becoming more and more stringent in responding to violations, and journal evaluation criteria are becoming stricter.
This time, Scopus applied algorithms to detect anomalous citation activity, mass self-citations, and unethical editorial practices.
As a result, several journals that had high visibility but did not meet the standards of scientific integrity were removed from the database.
We have prepared this article to summarize the September update, to show the official list of excluded journals, as well as unofficial publications that have already lost indexing and those that are under consideration in CSAB.
