Its permanent owner is Elsevier. The database was created as an alternative to Web of Science. Since the indexed materials of WoS often concern mainly social, technical and natural sciences, many researchers talked about creating a new platform.<\/p><p>The Scopus system is organized a little differently. It is not just a bibliographic database, but also a tool that allows you to track the citations of articles published in scientific journals.<\/p><p>In total, the Scopus database includes 18,000 publications, including those from technical disciplines, medical sciences, and the humanities. Not only scientific journals are indexed, but also published conference proceedings and serial book editions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f36f496 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f36f496\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 ><strong>Web of Science: brief information <\/strong><\/h4><p>The Web of Science platform was created in the 1960s and until 2016 belonged to the Thomas Reuters company. Its current owner is Clarivate Analytics. This platform hosts databases of scientific literature and patents covering all scientific fields. There are 250 thousand of them. These are not only technical disciplines, but also natural sciences, social sciences, and research in the arts.<\/p><p>The core of this platform is a scientometric database, which includes over 18,000 leading journals. Their archives contain publications dating back to 1900. The platform also includes Ukrainian publications.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-48f174d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"48f174d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" id=\"osn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-a682833\" data-id=\"a682833\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f73401f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f73401f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 ><strong>Main differences between systems <\/strong><\/h4><p >Although Scopus and Web of Science are considered to be approximately equal in importance and meet all quality criteria, there is still a difference between them that may affect the choice.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p ><strong>Main criteria: <\/strong><\/p><ul ><li  aria-level=\"1\"><span >Coverage and volume of material. The leader in terms of volume is Web of Science, since this scientometric database has existed since 1961 and remains the oldest in the world. It is not surprising that over the years the database has accumulated more than 50 million works, and these are not only journal articles, but also monographs, patents, conference proceedings (there are 120 thousand of them). But the total number of records in Scopus grows annually by an average of 2-3 million pieces. In addition, its database mostly overlaps with Web of Science (abbreviated as WoS) and duplicates it.<\/span><\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\"><span >Assessment mechanism. Scopus uses the Hirsch index, which has become an important assessment of the activities of an educational institution. In relation to a specific author, this platform uses the citation index. This indicator is the most universal and sought-after in the scientific world. WoS journals use less universal impact factors. A competing platform also uses them, but only in certain cases.<\/span><\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\"><span >Ease of use. WoS is an older and conservative platform, it is not as convenient to use as Scopus, where the author can register in a personal account and get a unique ID. In the future, it will be easy to find his works by this code. Scopus also boasts a deeper interface. Thematic coverage. Although both databases are multi-vector and cover almost all areas of human knowledge, Scopus contains more materials in the humanities, and WoS contains more publications in the exact sciences. But this division is conditional, since the policy of the platforms does not imply restrictions on the topic. And it will not affect the level of authority of the publication either. Just such a ratio will indicate to the applicant the level of competition he will face when submitting an application.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\"><span >Citation depth and platform capabilities. Deeper citations and extensive content in Web of Science, with Scopus, as a newer database, focusing on materials from the last few years.<\/span><\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\"><span >The quartile system. It is present in both sites. But in Scopus it is clearly expressed, its value can be found out through the percentile or the Scimago system. In WoS, the quartile system is much more difficult to find out. The choice should be made based on the described factors. But it will be more convenient for Ukrainian scientists to work with the Scopus system.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7e632fa7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7e632fa7\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" id=\"rsn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f5f8c71\" data-id=\"f5f8c71\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c8a75b6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7c8a75b6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4><strong>Reasons why Scopus is more popular in Ukraine than Web of Science<\/strong><\/h4><p>Optimization of scientific activity is achieved due to the fact that, using the database and tools provided by the Scopus system, a scientist can monitor new publications in the field of his interest, find experts in related fields, and search for recently emerged directions. Access to these studies creates healthy competition in science. At the same time, the system guarantees the integrity and protection from unauthorized actions for each author&#039;s work.<\/p><p>The Ministry of Education of Ukraine insists on placing scientific works on the Scopus database. Accordingly, universities require more publications in Scopus from teachers and scientists. In some universities, contracts clearly state that only publication in Scopus is counted.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>\u041e\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043d\u0456 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0438, \u0437\u0430 \u044f\u043a\u0438\u043c\u0438 \u041c\u0456\u043d\u0456\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u043e\u0441\u0432\u0456\u0442\u0438 \u043d\u0430\u043f\u043e\u043b\u044f\u0433\u0430\u0454 \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0456\u043a\u0430\u0446\u0456\u0457 \u0441\u0430\u043c\u0435 \u0432 Scopus: <\/strong><\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">Most reputable scientific journals in Ukraine (primarily those published by institutes of the National Academy of Sciences) are indexed in Scopus and have the highest quartiles.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">The system of quartiles, that is, bibliometric indicators that reflect the level of citation, is more pronounced in the Scopus system. The WoS platform also uses the quartile system, but it is not so clearly expressed and less universal. Scopus provides a more objective idea of citation according to this system, and the specific values of the indicators are what a scientist publishes in rated journals for. These indices affect his reputation and the approval of grant applications.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">Every year, the Scopus platform publishes a ranking of universities. This is very important for universities, as it reflects the level of their real scientific activity. And those with a higher rating find it easier to get funding for new projects. There are other privileges that the leaders of the rating receive. The Scopus system provides profiles not only for authors, but also for educational institutions. But this is a kind of privilege that is available only to those universities whose employees have placed a certain number of publications on the platform. The profile displays the rating. Universities are ranked according to the Hirsch index. This indicator is calculated based on the number of scientific publications and their citations. Therefore, the more representatives of the university publish their articles in the publications of the Scopus platform, the higher the chances that the educational institution will rise to new positions in the table.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">And the last reason is that Scopus annually ranks each country by the number of publications. Of course, every country wants to be one of the best.
