Scientometric databases are in high demand, and there is also a need to ensure one does not get lost among other researchers. So what should an author of scientific publications do to ensure they aren\u2019t confused with anyone else, given that there are several other Ivan Ivanovich Ostapenkos or Tamara Petrovna Sidorenkos in the world? The answer to this question already exists. The platform\u2019s developers found it and presented it to the audience <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>.<\/p><p><span >In this article, you'll learn more about the tools and features this platform offers its users. There are problems related to the tradition of initialism, as well as the peculiarities of using different writing systems.<\/p><p>The organization that launched this independent registry is called ORCID Inc. The database began operating in October 2012, although it was announced back in 2009. The organization was registered in 2010 in the USA (Delaware).<\/p><p>The database can also interact with other identification systems. But in order not to get lost among other authors or namesakes, there is a need for a notation system that makes it possible to find the researcher&#039;s works without problems.<\/p><p>What does using an ORCID ID give a scientist?<\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">Many editorial offices of recognized foreign publications require this identifier when submitting publications.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">To apply for grants, you also need this alphanumeric code.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">It is necessary to open up the opportunity to participate in international conferences.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">This code improves the author&#039;s image in the scientific community, as it allows you to learn about how the researcher&#039;s articles are presented in the information space.<\/li><\/ul><p>The capabilities of this system are extensive. For example, it imports information about authors from the WoS and Scopus scientometric databases. To perform this task, there is a special option that is responsible for binding to internal identifiers available on these platforms.<\/p><p>It is worth noting that this marks the beginning of the development of tools <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> It doesn't stop there. There are other options that allow for manual data entry. In practice, this means that an author can manually create their own portfolio consisting of actual works and write a brief introduction. This is precisely what will enable them to become even more visible to other researchers and to anyone interested in science who is searching for information on the topics the researcher is working on.<\/p><p>Speaking of tasks <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> Broadly speaking, it is related to:<\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">to eliminate inaccuracies that may arise when identifying a particular author;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">to eliminate confusion when it is impossible to understand and determine which scientist the article belongs to, if it concerns namesakes;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">simplify the search for materials from specific researchers;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">make the information database more organized;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">to influence the scientific citation index to be truly truthful.<\/li><\/ul><p>In order to accurately count how many publications an author has, there must be a single profile. That is exactly why there is <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>. That is why the ORCID ID was developed.<\/p><h4><strong>How to register with ORCID<\/strong><\/h4><p>First of all, it is important to log in through the official website, which is called <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/orcid.org<\/a>. Next, follow these steps:<\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">open the section called &quot;For researchers&quot;;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">click on the link &quot;Register for an ORCID iD&quot;;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">fill in all the required fields, starting with the first and last name and ending with the password with its duplication;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">choose an acceptable level of privacy for yourself;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">make the necessary marks regarding your preferences for sending messages;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">choose whether you want to be informed about system news and changes;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">read the terms of the privacy policy and fill in the appropriate fields;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">check the correctness of the entered data;<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">Complete the registration by clicking on the button responsible for this.<\/li><\/ul><h4>How to find out your ORCID ID<\/h4><p><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> It's easy to find out who the author is. To find your own <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>, you should follow the recommendation below.<\/p><p><span ><span >There is this information in the top left corner of the page. If you look closely at all the options <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>, registration will be easy and successful, and using the service afterward will also be hassle-free.<\/p><h4><strong>How to add your articles to ORCID<\/strong><\/h4><p>First, traditionally, you need to log in by entering your username and password. Then you will see your profile, and at the bottom there will be a tab called \u201cWorks\u201d. You need to click where it is indicated by the arrow. By the way, navigating the site is quite simple. Next, you will see a button with the option \u201cAdd works\u201d. When you click in this menu, a drop-down list option is visualized. And then you can choose between different options. Let&#039;s consider them in more detail.<\/p><h4><strong>&quot;Find and connect&quot;<\/strong><\/h4><p>The \u201cImport Works\u201d window will open there. In it, you can see online resources from which automatic import of publications is available. We will consider this in a separate paragraph later, but for now, let\u2019s return to the functionality.<\/p><h4><strong>&quot;Link Bib TeX&quot;<\/strong><\/h4><p>You can import citations from files created in BibTeX format (.bib). This also applies to files exported from Google Scholar. Click the button labeled \u201cSelect File\u201d and upload the file. This file must first be exported from the resource where your works are already listed. The publications will then appear in your profile. <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> automatically.<\/p><h4><strong>&quot;Link manually&quot;<\/strong><\/h4><p>You can select the \u201cAdd work\u201d option. This allows you to add any of your published articles. This feature is good because you can select and upload even those works that are not available on the Internet. This feature is often chosen by those who want to present a complete list of their published articles. When you have uploaded an article, the final step will be the \u201cAdd to list\u201d option. What is so good about the described feature? Its advantages are expressed in several contexts at once:<\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">A scientist has the opportunity to present all of his or her work, not just the work that is available online.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">He can better manage his scientific reputation by presenting his own work in full.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">This feature is useful for those cases when you need to present your work in a presentable manner, submitting information for grants, internships, competitions, and other professional opportunities.<\/li><\/ul><p>Therefore, when you use the tool <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>, it's important to understand all of its features so that you don't miss out on its latest capabilities.<\/p><h4><strong>How do I link an author's ORCID ID to other databases?<\/strong><\/h4><p>Resource <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> It is linked to the world\u2019s most well-known scientometric databases. Using the \u201cImport Publications\u201d feature, you can automatically import your scientific articles. Let\u2019s look at this using specific databases as examples.<\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">CrossRef Metadata Search. You can import any article with a DOI from CrossRef. When you click on the link, the system displays articles sorted by last name in <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>. You can also search for materials on your own using the search function at the top of the page. Below each item, you'll see a green button labeled \"ADD TO ORCID.\"<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">ResearcherID. A profile in the Web of Science scientometric database can be linked to a profile on the platform <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>. Once the profiles are linked, publications can be imported automatically. How does this benefit researchers in practice? It gives them the opportunity to gain greater visibility on reputable platforms. The Web of Science database is the second largest in the world in terms of the volume of published content. It is also growing very rapidly.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">Scopus \u2013 Elsevier. There are no other examples in the world of such successful and rapid scaling of scientometric databases. The resource ranks first in terms of the volume of content it hosts. Scopus has its own complex system of percentiles and quartiles, which are used to determine the rankings of researchers and publications. Therefore, it is beneficial when profiles <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> and Skopus are linked. To link the profiles, you need to grant Skopus permission to access the account <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a>. You can find your profile using the search option, then confirm the profile linkage and export your materials. After that, users of the Scopus database will be able to find the researcher\u2019s profile in ORCID.<\/li><\/ul><h4><strong>How to make changes to ORCID?<\/strong><\/h4><p>To edit your profile on this platform, you must:<\/p><ul><li  aria-level=\"1\">Select the tab for researchers. It is located at the top of the screen.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">Click on the account settings menu.<\/li><li  aria-level=\"1\">Use the function you need. For example, there is a menu for locking the profile, adding or changing the email address, and changing the password.<\/li><\/ul><p>In short, the platform is easy to use.<\/p><h4><strong>Search for authors on the ORCID website<\/strong><\/h4><p>To find an author in this system, you need to:<\/p><ul><li>use the search bar located at the top of the site;<\/li><li>enter the last name of interest in Latin letters.<\/li><\/ul><p>The results will then open. They are displayed in a table format. The first column will contain the ORCID code, followed by the researcher&#039;s name, and the third column will contain their last name.<\/p><h4><strong>To sum up\u2026<\/strong><\/h4><p>For a modern scholar, the extent to which they are able to communicate with a community of like-minded colleagues plays a major role in their academic career. That is why most researchers strive to publish their work in journals included in prestigious scientometric databases. The ORCID code exists to prevent researchers from getting lost among people with the same last name and to ensure they do not lose track of their publications in the event of a name change.<\/p><p>Articles in <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ORCID<\/a> You can import and export data by linking your account to profiles in scientometric databases. You can upload your published works that have not previously been posted online. In short, the range of features is extensive, making this platform appealing to many researchers.
